800 Meter Run

Mortakis was over 2 seconds ahead of 3rd place finisher Amanda Johns of Charleston Catholic who just edged Wheeling Central's Claire Caruso for 3rd by 0.06 seconds. The race was marred by an incident about 200 meters in when Pocahontas' Adrienne Nottingham was cut off and stepped on the incredibly pointless rail the lines the inside of the track. She was unable to finish and had to drop out of the 200 as well. Supposedly the point of the rail is to keep people from cutting the race short. In laned races, all other lanes have that ability. The rail proves year after year to be a hindrance. It is a disadvantage to runners in lane 1 in laned races and is a hazard to everyone in the non-laned races.
RunWV's Current Score: 18 of 24.

1600 Meter Run
St. Marys' Jennifer McFarland kicked away from Wheeling Central's Claire Caruso and Doddridge's Jamie Barr with about 200 meters to go. Caruso held off one last late charge by Barr, who led most of the race.

At the end of three laps, the foursome was still together and had extended their lead to 6 seconds. At the mile, Coffman led McFarland and John through in 6:12-6:13. Trudgeon had dropped off the pace, coming through in 6:16. The pace slowed dramatically on lap five as the front three settled for a 1:42 lap. That allowed Trudgeon to keep a close distance on the group. The next runners were 6 seconds behind Trudgeon. Lap six continued the slow pace with the front three staying together. Trudgeon was now five seconds behind. Charleston Catholic's Brittney Hoyer had closed to within 4 seconds of of Trudgeon. The end of lap seven saw the pace quicken a little as Coffman started to make a move and McFarland countered. Hoyer had moved within three seconds of Trudgeon. Coffman and McFarland broke away from John on the backstretch turning it into a two-person race. McFarland, as she would do later in the 1600 and the 800, found one more gear for her final kick and was able to pull away for the victory. Coffman was less than 2 seconds back. John held on for 3rd, and Trudgeon held her three second advantage over Hoyer. The first four were under 13:00.
RunWV's Current Score: 28 of 36.

The top eight teams finished within 0.78 seconds of each other. It was a fun race to watch, just not a particularly fast one. In fact, the winning time this year would not have placed last year.
